Baertrax built a custom swing-out tire carrier for my CJ. The frame ties into the roll cage at the top and the frame tabs on my rear crossmember ath the bottom. This effectively ties my cage into the frame of the Jeep. The bars are sleeved to increase their strength. In these pics the primary support bars are in place. Russ and Lance did a great job of tucking the bars in close to the body. The also protect the tail lights from damage.

Here is the finished project. The carrier is sturdy enough that I can climb around on it without problems.

The swing out allows me to access the tailgate and jerry cans I will be carrying behind the fuel cell. Also notice the recovery shackle tab in the center of the lower bar. This is a double tubed bar that is slotted through a hole in the tab and then welded in place. The tab was then welded to the rear crossmember to farther increase the strength of the recovery point. I have pulled a Toyota Tacomma out of a hole using this point without damaging it.

I mounted one of Russ's 35" tires to see how it would look. That tire looks huge on the back of that little CJ-5.

This was taken in better light and you can see the construction and structural details.
Update: This carrier took a Semi on in a low speed collision while strapped to my trailer. There was NO damage to the carrier, Jeep or trailer in the accident. The truck straddled the trailer and slid up it until the grill hit the tire on the back of the Jeep. The only damage was one broken ratchet strap on my trailer. The semi suffered a lot of damage to the fiberglass bumper and the aluminum grill where it hit the Jeep.
